J.R.R. Tolkien THE LORD OF THE RINGS The Deluxe India Paper Edition Please Note: pages 1057 to 1088 are missing in this copy. This is a binder's error, the pages were not removed and there is no evidence that they are gone until one does a close collation of the book. TOLKIEN, J.R.R. [John Ronald Reuel]. THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Comprising Part I: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING [along with] Part II: THE TWO TOWERS [along with] Part III: THE RETURN OF THE KING. Deluxe One-Volume Edition on India Paper. Place Published: London Publisher: George Allen & Unwin. Date Published: [1978]. Edition: De Luxe Edition. Binding: Hardcover Condition: Near Fine in a Near Fine Publisher's Box, but defective, pages 1057 to 1088 are missing in this copy. This is a binder's error, the pages were not removed and there is no evidence that they are gone until one does a close collation of the book. Book Id: 308991 Description: Sixth Impression of the Deluxe India Paper Edition. Three volumes in one, comprising 'The Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Two Towers' and 'The Return of the King'. Octavo, original black cloth titled and ruled in gold on spine panel, front panel blocked with a design by Tolkien in gold, silver and green, black & white 'marbled' endpapers, page edges speckled green. Printed on wove India paper. 1193 pp, two folding maps. Lacking pages 1057 to 1088. A few faint marks to the cloth, a bright, near fine copy without dust jacket, as issued, in the original publishers box with printed paper label and protective tissue wrap. Unusually, the box is also in near fine condition, showing only some slight rubbing but none of the wear or splitting which is common to such a fragile item. An excellent copy (despite the missing pages). Comments: ¶ The Deluxe India Paper Edition, first issued in 1969. The first three impressions of this edition were issued in a slipcase, these later impressions came in a box with a paper label printed in red & black. The text follows that of the Second Revised edition, including the Foreword, Appendixes and Index. The binding decoration, of a Númenórean throne with 'Elendil' in tengwar, is a simplfied version of a design made by Tolkien for the binding of 'The Return of the King' but never used.
