A complete first edition collection of J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy trilogy "The Lord of the Rings", including: "The Fellowship of the Ring" [1954], "The Two Towers" [1955], and "The Return of the King" [1955]. All of the books are first UK editions published by George Allen & Unwin in 1954-1955. "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Return of the King" are first editions, first impressions with no later printings mentioned. Both of these books have the signature mark '4' and the slipped type on page 49. "The Two Towers" is a first edition, second impression as stated on the copyright page. Published by George Allen & Unwin Ltd, London. 8vo [6" x 9"], 423 pp, 352 pp, and 416 pp, respectively. With pull out maps present at the last page of text, with the map for "The Return of the King" laid in. The books are in good minus condition. Wear to the boards with staining to the spines, spreading to the joints. The front boards are cocked. Soiling to the preliminary and terminal pages. The textblocks are toned but largely clean, save some small pen marks in "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Return of the King". Bookstore's sticker on the front paste-down of "Fellowship of the Ring" and a remnant on the paste-down of "The Two Towers".
