DESCRIPTION : Unique collection of 99 books from the library of Michael Hilary Reuel Tolkien, including some by J.R.R. Tolkien, some given by family members, and one of his older brothers books; almost all signed, as detailed below. As it is a complicated listing, 12 photographs attached, with the rest of photographs at the bottom, just after list of photographs. Michael Hilary Reuel Tolkien (1920-1984), second son of J. R. R. Tolkien (John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973)), brother to John Francis Reuel Tolkien (1917-2003), Christopher Reuel Tolkien (1924-), and Priscilla Mary Reuel Tolkien (1929-). Educated at the Dragon school, Oxford, Michael helped with the typing of the manuscript of The Hobbit with his left hand whilst off school having cut his right hand badly on a school window. He won the George medal in the second world war as an anti-aircraft gunner defending aerodromes in the Battle of Britain. A teaching career, including at Stonyhurst college in Lancashire, a son and two daughters followed. He died at his home in Waddington, near Clitheroe; Halewood & Sons, bookdealers in Preston purchased much from his library of books shortly afterwards (I sold one in 2007 which isn't on Halewood's list, and another was sold on eBay in 2013). They then offered it for sale as a complete collection, or if unsold as 80 small lots (individual books or sets of books). Catalogue of this full collection as it was c.1985 is included. I recently bought the remnants (which is still the majority) of it from a book auction in the north of England (full details, copy of my invoice from the auction, and covering letter from me provided to the winning bidder) in a single lot. Everything from that auction lot is included here. Where book is signed by MHRT, unless noted otherwise it is in blue ink, with some capitals in red ink, "Michael H. R. Tolkien". Mostly in English, with few books in other languages as noted. Editions of general books not stated, just printing year. Where dated by MHRT, date in []brackets after book. Some additionally monogrammed MTR (though is MRT) with date in roman numeral for month, and last 2 digits of year. Halewood catalogue number noted below, for many books - all the others are also in there, just not as single books.
