83. Tolkien (J.R.R.) .The Hobbit, or, There and Back Again, first edition, first impression, frontispiece, plate and 8 illustrations by Tolkien, map endpapers, original decorative cloth, slight shelf-lean, dust-jacket with ms. correction on lower inside flap, spine very slightly darkened, fraying to spine ends with minor loss, a few very minor chips, slight loss to foot of upper panel near spine, insect damage partly affecting fore-edge joints and edges of inner flaps, ink signature on upper inside flap, 8vo, 1937.
Estimate: £6000 - £8000
***Despite the defects mentioned, this is still a very good example of the dust-jacket with both panels and spine bright..


84. Tolkien (J.R.R.) .The Lord of the Rings, 3 vol., first editions, first impressions, vol.III third state with sagging text and printed ‘4’ on p.49, maps, ink name on front free endpapers, original cloth, dust-jackets, vol.I with closed tear ascending from spine onto upper panel and ink flecking to foot of upper panel, vol.I & III with small closed split at foot of spines, rubbed at lower corners, slightly frayed and creased at spine ends, light surface marking, overall an attractive set, 8vo, 1954-55.
Estimate: £6000 - £8000
