It is wanly - Tolkien knew a lot more about words than most of us; see Shippey's discussion of Treebeard's looking 'sad but not unhappy'. Once, 'Sad' meant 'settled, determined'.

Similarly, there's more than one way to look at 'wan' - see The Ring of Words p.25, fig. 9.

'Its original sense seems to have been 'dark in hue' with especially frequent application to things of gloomy unpleasant associations'.
