In London, there is a huge choice of bookshops, but you may want to visit the following as they are all within walking distance of Piccadilly Cirus Tube Station.

I would suggest that you have a look at Hatchards in Piccadilly (http://www.hatchards.co.uk/), fairly small Tolkien selection but probably the largest number of 'signed' books by signed authors that you will ever see in one bookshop. There is a Waterstones about 100 yards up the road towards Piccadilly Circus, which has on the first floor quite a lage Tolkein selection, but Blackwells in Oxford is better.

For older books Charing Cross Road is definately worth a look, it has a lot of bookshops but make sure that you pay a visit to Cecil Court which is a sideroad and has some excellent bookshops specialising in rare books.
