I have several items signed by both Priscilla and Fr. John. Allowing for the problems of viewing through a PC, I'd say the first one looks ok to me. The second one rings some warning bells:

- What are the odds that two almost identical (and rare) articles should appear on ebay at the same time?

- The signatures in the second copy look identical to those in the first; not always a good sign!

- Both articles are said to be from 'Oxenmoot'. In the first, that's based on a mis-reading of Fr. John's writing. But I'd guess the second sales pitch is simply aping the first, and so I'd be very wary of that one.

"So, while I was at the Wade (but not as a result of my being there), I found out that Arne Zettersten's long-awaited memoir of JRRT has now been published. Unfortunately, it's in Swedish, a language I don't speak or read. I had assumed it would be in either English (the language of most of Tolkien's readership) or Danish (the author being a professor at the University of Copenhagen). So, here's hoping for an English translation."

Yes, you are correct, not sure why I did that. By the way, the book arrived yesterday. The signature looks authentic to me. The ink appears old and faded like the page of the book it's signed on. Also, weren't American editions of the Lord of the Rings also sold in Europe? I realise there are many doubts about signed items on Ebay (and for good reason) but this signature matches very closely with another one I own with excellent prevenance from the original owner. This particular signature has an opening at the bottom of the J which can be seen on some example images of Tolkien's signature available on the Internet. Here are some images I took of the signature this morning.

Here is an image of the signature on a letter from 1964 I own with provenance from the original owner:

If the former signature is a forgery it looks to have been done very well and a very long time ago. Looking forward to everyone's opinion and thanks for the advice and help offered in this forum.

Jim.

Wow! Only $2,900 for a paperback copy. I think this has to be the most overpriced Tolkien book I've seen on eBay, especially considering the book's condition. I think perhaps 29 cents is a more reasonable starting bid. http://cgi.ebay.com/Lord-of-the-Rings ... e83b&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
