Thanks for posting these, Trotter. You are correct, it is only the first two recordings in your list that have Tolkien speaking on them.

The British Library is preventing anyone outside the UK from being able to play these files, though you can still see the rest of the page. Please contact me offline if anyone would like to discuss this issue further.

It appears that the British Library have now placed these recordings on their web site as they are out of copyright (1929).

English Conversation: At the Tobacconist's

English Conversation: Wireless

I thought these were the only two recordings with Tolkien on them but they also list another two recordings (these seem to be in error as Tolkien does not appear to be on either recording). UPDATE The two recordings below are no longer listed as by Tolkien.

I'm coming to Amsterdam next month! I will be attending the IBC show (Sep 10th through 15th) so I will have lots of free evenings, especially on the weekend. I've started reaching out to some of my friends and acquaintances in the area, but I would really like to see if we can get some sort of mini-moot going if at all possible. If you are interested and available somewhere in that timeframe, can you let me know here or offline (webmaster at tolkienguide dot com)? Mithrennaith or others involved with Tolkien Society Unquendor, you doing anything that weekend or want to do anything that weekend? I'd love to see any and all of you, alone or in a group!

I can also bring quite a few books (new or used) with me on the plane, so if you want something from the USA and we can arrange a meet, let me know what you want (no shipping!).

Okay, this is not even marginally connected to Tolkien collecting, but I wanted to share anyways. There is a website called translationparty.com where you type in a sentence in English, and it continually translates to Japanese, back to English, back to Japanese, etc. until you hit "equilibrium" (where the sentence no longer changes from the quirks in the translation engine, which happens to be Google's).

As an example (and to keep this vaguely on topic), I put in

When Mr Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton.

The result I got back is

Bilbo's birthday party, the first major project, a special Baggins, the back-end eleventy Hobbiton is excited to celebrate.

Sounds like the kind of prose I would use! (I have about that much writing talent, compared to the Professor.)

Here is the link for this particular "Translation Party".

What an excellent discussion!

I must agree with Aelfwine on this, as i've found in my all be it limited experience of Tolkien Studies, ASSUME NOTHING!!!
