It sounds like Tolkien's own illustration. This first appeared in the British Tolkien calendar for 1977

I got this request for help, anyone know more?
--- i've a pencil sketch of helms deep & the hornburg which i recently purchased, framed from a car boot sale. it has helms deep sketched in the centre with the hornburg in the background. 'helm's deep & the hornburg are written to the left of centre. it's old, judging by the fading on the mount and it measures approx 14" x 14". i can find 1 or 2 images via the internet but no detail of it's origin. i'm guessing it's from a calendar maybe? can you help?

There certainly are illustrated editions of The Silmarillion. Most of them are foreign editions of the Ted Nasmith-illustrated Silmarillions. By example, I have the 1998 Nasmith-illustrated one in English, French, Korean, Danish, Hungarian and Spanish.
As for the moment, I am working on my website which will show my collection of foreign Silmarillions. I can say that building a website is more difficult than I thought! Just keep an eye on http://www.silmarillion-project.org the following months, I shall do my best to make it something useful and beautiful.

Thanks, Deagol. I might have got that one - the one I got had small, basic line drawings at the start of each chapter, with no obvious resemblance to the text.

There is an illustrated German translation - published in 1978 I think.
