This is a specific question, but could be answered more broadly. I've just bought a book from The Kent State University Press which has a double line number (you know the lines I mean), reading:-

09 08 07 06 05 [small break] 5 4 3 2 1

Anyone any idea, for sure, what this denotes?

And here is the quick response from HarperCollins:

"As far as I am aware all the copies marked 1 went to Australia/New Zealand - we did an early print run in the summer to ensure it could be shipped there for them to publish simultaneously. I asked for the UK run to be marked 1 as well, but was overruled by the stock controllers!"

So get your overseas orders in place if you really want that "1".

Got this question via email. I am waiting for an answer from HC, but in the meantime, have any of you seen any first impressions?

I have visited several bookshops to try to buy the Pocket 75 anniversary edition all the copies I have seen do not have a full print line but just the number 2. Is there a "First" Edition and is this numbered 1?

Sorry...

There is another copy, claiming "1968" as the publication date --this is obviously in error, but it may still be a 1st impression.

1st edition LORD OF THE RINGS 1968 (1ST 3 Books in one

It's not really in the same condition tho'...

If you're referring to the DJ --then, yes, it's a standard DJ. If you mean the boards themselves --again, yes, standard paper covered boards. However the point is, if you'd seen a Clowes 1st impression with paper covered boards --one would have assumed it had the Ulmo error corrected i.e. it was the 2nd Clowes state (or the "intermediate", between the 1st state & the Clowes Book Club edition --whatever you want to call it). It is not (the 2nd state). It has both errors present. More unconventionally it has a priced jacket, casting doubt on the cast iron assumption that Clowes = "export". It's more complicated than that. Not hugely so, but not so clear cut.
