I know someone who has a book with a similarly fine dedication and signature, also on a separate piece of paper. He tells me that the books (there are others) are safe while in his care, but he's concerned that this sort of thing will happen to them once they're sold (he has children, and wants to leave the books to them.)

But there's no question of this practice coming to a stop, so long as the greedy and unscrupulous know that a Tolkien signature will fetch more on a copy of TH or LotR than on an original piece. What we need is a bit of education among the buyers! But, as a lot of folk who buy this sort of thing do so because of investment and/or speculation, I fear no-one would take any notice.

I entirely agree. Nearly every time the question of fake signatures comes up on this board, Ebay's failings are discussed.

The terrible forgery that Rown's spotted earlier in this thread sold, even though I reported it as a fake (Ebay ignore this) and we now find that live auctions can not be removed once listed.

I wonder if the Tolkien Estate could get Ebay to remove counterfeit signatures quickly when reported, using the Ebay Vero program, as we know that Christopher Tolkien resents the sale of these items. I hope that they have trademarked his signature as well.

So, I'm pretty sure three of the books are from Tolkien's library (the ones once owned by David Miller). I contacted David Miller and he had this to say:

"Yes, I can confirm the sale of the 3 books (from Loome) to Greg Miller, and the small inscription portion was a gift to him as well. I'm afraid that I
was unable to find one of the 2 page catalog's from Loome, as I purchased mine thru abe.com as Loome was listing them online. As well as I can remember, the 3 books cost me slightly less than $2000."

Here is a picture of the endpapers of the books before the signatures were removed.

The Bloomsbury listing on eBay shows that the auction ended with a bid of GBP150, but 0 bidders and 0 bids. It's a poor system that can't, for technological reasons, withdraw an item before the sale, or at least add a note stating that there are questions of authenticity. Since this piece no doubt will endure in Web archives, one can only hope that future researchers also come across our exchange about it.
