Khamul - my understanding is that New Line (via Saul Zaentz) has the rights to anything in the Hobbit and LoTR (including appendices), but has no rights to anything in HoME / Silmarillion / Unfinished Tales, etc.

So if material appears anywhere in LoTR/Hobbit, they can use it. If material does not appear in any of the books, they can use it (i.e. they can invent material). However, if material is in HoME/Sil/UT (etc), but not in the Hobbit/LoTR they absolutely cannot use it.

Cheers
Stu

I think that if the board was showing through, that you did the right thing getting it replaced. I don't think the number matters at all, unless it matters to you.

Interesting that they have only sold 150 copies. Realistically, that means they got the price point completely wrong, as there is zero chance they will sell the remaining 350 copies (all the die-hard collectors have already bought them). I suspect the price will drop to 200 pounds or so (possibly via a reseller that can ship to the US, such as Amazon.co.uk), at which point they will probably shift [given enough time]. I suspect any prospective purchaser at this point would be holding off and waiting to see how it pans out.

In hindsight, I would have been happier if I had only bought one copy, but I'm planning on leaving both to my kids (and I haven't even had kids yet), so long term, I don't think it matters too much!!!

DAMN IT!

I've had to admit defeat with my #58 copy!

I mentioned in the other CoH thread that my copy had, what looked like, a scuff. After some thought & a good look I had to send it back.

The leather had been poorly tooled around one (back board; outside top) of the corners; you could actually see the board through it! It didn't look too good; but in the long term it was also a weak point, and I thought with time the leather would start to come away.

As I said to Deagol -Damn, Damn, and more Damn!! I don't have any 'Super' De Luxe editions; this was the first one I'd bought. And, #58 was nice and low for me. But now I've got #153...

Interestingly, as of the morning of the 17th only 152 copies had been shipped; hence me getting the next one. HC were extremely prompt at rectifying the problem mind you. I emailed on Sunday afternoon (undoubtedly not read until Monday morning), and the replacement was with me this morning (Wednesday!). [I currently have both copies!]

Your right about repair though Deagol! I did ask, but repair was not an option on the table. Annoyingly sense would tell you that #58 will be resold once repaired!

Please convince me that the number doesn't really matter...

By all accounts the films sound like a straight split of the book; with no mention (officially from the studios) of the second film entering into entirely made up territory (although I'm sure there'll be plenty of scope for that whilst supposedly following the books!).

(Metapraxis) Tolkien Enterprises (Saul Zaentz) own the rights (in respect to filming) of almost all aspects of The Hobbit & LotRs: so there is nothing stopping them 'inventing' plot/characters etc within the Hobbit/LotRs story framework. Look at all the pap the games cover which has no direct correlation to anything in LotRs; thats all licensed through Tolkien Enterprises. So I guess they have the scope (if they wish) to play about quite a bit within this part of Tolkien's Legendarium!

On the matter of the film rights & their sale (by Tolkien). Does anyone know anything (firmly) about this? I know various dates have been batted about (late 60's etc); but one of the most interesting parts I read about in an interview with Saul Zaentz, is that he actually met with the family in the mid-70's. Supposedly it was with Christopher and Priscilla (presumably after Tolkien's death).

I often wondered (if true) why -if the rights had already been sold outright. Mabey they hadn't. After all there was all the reputed bother with the production & distribution rights being held (for The Hobbit) by different studios. Mabey he attempted to aquire all the film rights for Tolkien's Middle-earth works i.e. the rights to the (then) forthcoming Silmarillion (?).

I think mabey (as Collectors) we should open a thread to discuss the influence of the films (the three LotRs ones & the forthcoming Hobbit films) on book collecting (or all collecting); good or bad...

We did a print run of 60 calendars. 58 have sold. Only two left! That statement is not so much to do the math for everyone as it is tell everyone "Thank you" for making it so popular. Should orders continue, we will do a second run as needed.

Holiday greetings to all!

Away from The Green Hill Country,
