Hi timsgirl,

I'll answer assuming that you have US 2nd edition sets (since Khamul did an excellent job answering if you have the UK set).

Are these the Orange/Red/Purple dustjacketed sets pictured below?

If they are first impressions (have a full number line "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1" on the copyright page) then they can have reasonable value - a few hundred dollars for VG/VG shape. They have a significant chance of being later impressions, or book club editions (no price on the dustjacket, no number line on the copyright page) in which case they don't have significant value - there are uncountable numbers of those available on the market at any given time.

I got number 3, and I am pretty sure from the transaction ID on my purchase that I was probably the second transaction in line (and if I hadn't farted around for 15 minutes, I would have probably been first and snagged number 1 myself!). I think 1 and 2 were probably just sold as a pair to a regular punter like me, rather than having gone to anyone 'special' (well, 'famous', anyway).

I personally think the numbers don't make a whole lot of difference (especially as these books are not exactly in short supply!), but hey, maybe it does matter to some people... :)

They are the maps from the books coloured by H.E. Riddett.
They were sold to booksellers in sets of 6, for them to split up and sell individually. Probably a ploy to get sellers to take more copies!

I was looking at an Ebay Item J.R.R. TOLKIEN ~ COMPLETE UNWIN HYMAN CATALOGUE 1989/90 and was intrigued by the entry on this page http://www.mjtbooks.com/images/ebay/jrrtcat08.jpg

There are two maps in packs of six, does anyone know what these maps looked liked, and why were they sold in packs of six?

If they are all 2nd(edition)/2nd(impressions) then they might attract a bit of interest from the more obsessive collectors out there (last impressions Tolkien had a hand in.) They'll still attract interest from the general collector if in good nick though. Might get between £50-£100 on eBay if just VG/VG. Mabey higher if excellent examples i.e. F/F.

I'm no expert though; mabey wait see what others estimate...
