That is an interesting letter. I wonder if there is a file somewhere of all of the letters Tolkien didn't respond to... most were probably tossed without a second thought I am guessing.

Now, could someone please tell the publishers, auction houses, and other sellers to spread out their lots a bit? This December has been ridiculous for the amount of high-priced items that I am interested in...

I was quite excited to receive a copy of Winter's Tales for Children a few years back - it has orange boards instead of the normal green boards (mentioned on Tolkienbooks.net now but it wasn't at the time). No mention of the board color until I had the book in hand, so it was quite pleasant to find!

Another, unique, item that I will always treasure in my collection is a hand drawn comic book of "The Hobbit" drawn by my wife when she was 15 years old (long, long before we ever met.)

I've got my copy on order!

Hey, I noticed that the calendar has not been announced on the Tolkien Society website. Drop them a note, I would think they would definitely place an announcement on their site (given that you are a smial and all...)

Work hammered me these past two weeks, so I haven't sent my questions on the calendar off yet. Soon...

Hmmm, no sale on either of those auctions (shocking!)

Two offers were declined on the Italian auction, though. Hopefully they were sane offers. Sometimes you just have to walk away from a good book at an outrageous price...

The HoME deluxe editions were released through the normal UK wholesale distribution channels. I got mine through Amazon.co.uk (shipped to the USA). Sometimes shipping is cheaper getting the books through Amazon.ca, as it seems that the UK editions are more regularly available there than the US ones (I don't think Houghton Mifflin owns the Canadian distribution rights.)

I don't know how the other super-deluxe signed editions were put out in prior years, though. Anyone recall?
