The truly terrible BBC programme called the 'One Show' had a piece on Tolkien in Birmingham on Thursday the 10th April.

You can still watch it on the BBC IPlayer if you live in the UK and to spare you watching the dross it starts 5 minutes and 50 seconds into the program (5 minutes long)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/page/ite ... rt=1&version_pid=b009s8hw

The interview is Giles Brandwith and Robert Blackman who wrote 'The Roots of Tolkien's Middle Earth' about Sarehole Mill, then are two Victorian Water Towers in Birmingham the inspiration for 'The Two Towers' and finally Mosely Bog, is it the Old Forest.

"Minor textual differences indicate that Variant 1 was printed before Variant 2."

The description above is quite correct, the difference is on one page in the two copies.

On Page 352, 6th line from the bottom, there is an entry for Ulmo

First Variant

Ulmo A Vala, one of the Aratar, called Lord of Waters and King of the Sea.

Second Variant

Ulmo A Vala, one of the Aratar, called Lord of Waters and King of the Sea.

Because the 'and' should not be in Italics and was corrected, the second variant must have been printed after the first.

I have to agree with Khamul's comments on this.

Deagol has done a fantastic job of documenting the UK books and to do the same for the US editions would involve two things.

1 - Actually having all the books in one collection.
2 - Spending many hundreds of hours documenting them on a web site.

So for these two reasons I think it is unlikely that a web site as comprehensive as Deagol's will exist for US books.

Here is the link that Khamul forgot to insert for The Holford Collection... in his previous post in case you have not seen it.

In the meantime this site does have quite a lot of information on US Editions.

Deagol,

Thanks for that, extremely helpful as always.

Does anyone know the UK price that this impression (9th) was sold at?

I still have a few problems with the sticker.

Any UK bookshop at the time could not set the price, it was set by the publisher, so it should be on the book

Is this label and The Silmarillion labels you mentioned possibly for export or was another sticker also on the book?

My copy of the Ninth Impression 1975 version of the book is not price clipped but has a big dark light blue A & U Sticker over the price.

Does anyone know what the price was under the label, if I hold it up to the light, it could be £1.45 and also any ideas about why the sticker does not have a new price on it?
