Last year a rare edition of John James Audubon's "Birds of America," which was first published in the 1820s, sold for $11.5 million. Some of the works of William Shakespeare are estimated to sell for $250,000. The asking price of an autographed L. Frank Baum copy of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is $110,000 and only recently, in Half Price Books' Cleveland store, a "Lord of the Rings" rare boxed trilogy set signed by J.R.R. Tolkien was valued to sell at around $30,000......

The Tolkien book included an inscription as well. "These are considered true treasures because very few books exist signed by J.R.R. Tolkien," Half Price Books expert Steve Leach said. "A website that specializes in Tolkien sold another boxed set for $9,000 with only the first volume signed. The description noted that Tolkien very rarely wrote anything other than his name. Other signed copies of individual books start at $7,500."

I can't see Kahamul being interested in this one as well, from Bloomsbury Auctions sale on the 15th September

323. Tolkien (J.R.R.) The Lord of the Rings, 3 vol., revised edition, dust-jackets, some creasing and browning, a few small tears, 1967; and 19 others, Children's, including a fine modern set of C.S. Lewis's The Narnia Chronicles, 7 vol., 8vo (22). est. £100 – £150

What??? ($350 for a large print Hobbit)

THE HOBBIT ~ JRR TOLKIEN ~ RARE LARGE PRINT EDITION OOP

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HOBBIT-JRR- ... tible&hash=item19c87daea5

A Rare Large Print Edition, only three more on eBay (one seller has more than 10 available of this rare book, how lucky!!!), amazingly all much cheaper

I also like to quote this seller's description and how it is ignored in this sale, and sadly most of his auctions.

A FEW WORDS ON TOLKIEN COLLECTIBILITY...I have been collecting Tolkien books for over 30 years and it really galls me to find people selling items for ridiculous prices claiming they are "rare" or "highly collectible"; and what's worse is, naive people are paying it~! The fact is, there are relatively few "RARE" Tolkien items on eBay and most of the stuff claimed as such, just isn't. Granted, some may be hard to find, but not rare.

From the One Ring.net

A discussion on Tolkien was held on the Irish radio station Newstalk last Sunday. Their “Talking History” program covered Tolkien’s life and how that influenced his writing. Guests included Julianne Stephens, Conor Kostick, Stephen Benedict, John Garth and Simon Tolkien
