Thanks for that.

It always amazes me that GA&U spent so much effort on documenting the impression of a book (and getting it wrong a lot of times), yet Houghton Mifflin seemed to have no interest at all.

I just saw a copy of this book on Ebay and noticed that the 2nd Impression Return of the King had "Second Impression" printed on the spine of the dust-wrapper.

My first edition copies of the LOTR in dust-wrappers don't have any indication of the Impression on the Spine, so I was interested to see if anybody knows how long this practice went on for and which impressions were involved?

Very interesting interview with John Howe both from his own web site and the LOTRplaza.com.

If you are interested in the Reverend Dodgeson (sic) book as Lewis Caroll and have never seen the original hand written and drawn version of Alice's Adventures Under Ground, then have a look at the Turning The Pages project by the British Library, if you have the right software installed you can zoom in and see every page in the book.

Windows XP or Vista version with .Net installed

I entirely agree. Nearly every time the question of fake signatures comes up on this board, Ebay's failings are discussed.

The terrible forgery that Rown's spotted earlier in this thread sold, even though I reported it as a fake (Ebay ignore this) and we now find that live auctions can not be removed once listed.

I wonder if the Tolkien Estate could get Ebay to remove counterfeit signatures quickly when reported, using the Ebay Vero program, as we know that Christopher Tolkien resents the sale of these items. I hope that they have trademarked his signature as well.
