I am sad to have to report that both the book and event have been canceled by ADC books.

Hi, I am sorry to have to advise that despite the tremendous work and dedication to this project by Angela Gardner, Neil Holford, the Publishers, designers, artists, and financial backing by ADC Publications Ltd I have no choice but to cancel the publication of the book for legal reasons. Despite many revisions and changes made at the insistence of The Tolkien Estate it appears that The Tolkien Estate will seek to take court action to prevent the release of this book regardless. Everyone involved in the publication has worked hard to meet the requests of The Tolkien Estate time and time again, however it would be misleading to release a Biography on Hilary Tolkien without proper reference to his close relationship with his brother. The launch event on Saturday 4th December has therefore been cancelled and a full refund will be made shortly to anyone has placed advanced orders. Best wishes Andrew Compton

My regrets to all who have been involved in this project, I know how much time and work went into the book.

Anyway, my convoluted point is this. Yes, Clowes were probably physically producing their copies chronologically first (after all, Billing copies are printed by “offset lithography” --from the Clowes pages I always assumed...), but factors like whether the dj is priced, the binding is cloth, top page edges are dyed blue, headbands are present etc --are not necessarily factors that help determine whether a particular copy is a “true” (terminology commonly used) ‘Export’ 1st impression or not. There are many, many variants out there. Although, having said this, if there are any radically variant Billing copies out there --I haven’t seen any.

BH

But there is a difference in printing for the Clowes 1/1st, as discussed quite a lot before, the Billings copies are from the first Clowes printing.

(3) If the seller won't provide a letter of provenance OR such a letter does not add up, avoid the item. Such a letter is all important to my mind. If it's eBay, check out the seller's feedback and ask the experts here about the item. OK, you will alert others here to the item. But I'd bet that "everyone" already is aware of it. It is, after all, eBay!

Beren as expected is correct here, you need a trustworthy independent source of provenance for the item not a COA from the seller, a letter of provenance only means something if it can be reliably and independently validated.

"I am a wizard," continued Gandalf. "I have heard of you, if you have not heard of me; but perhaps you have heard of my good cousin Radagast who lives near the southern borders of Mirkwood?"

Scottish actor Sylvester McCoy, famous for his role as sci-fi's Dr Who in the 1980s, was this weekend cast as wizard Radagast the Brown in the film.

This is exactly what I feared, one mention of Radagast in the book and Jackson has cast an actor, I can sense more "wizard fights" looming.
