Harpercollins - Gold Ring on Chain???

I was wondering would anyone have any information on a Gold Ring on Chain (The One Ring) that was issued by Harpercollins.

Normally I would not have much interest in an item like this (books being the main focus), but the fact that it was issued by the publisher made it more interesting. It was included in an auction for a 1997 LOTR Deluxe and a 1999 Hobbit Deluxe (The limited editions of 1000 and 2500). In the listing the Seller stated that the Ring was issued by the publishers in a limited edition of 200. I was surprised that I had not come across one of these before this.

The package has arrived and it does indeed have the Harpercollins logo on the Front of the Ring Box (A Black Box with Harpercollins Logo in Gilt on the Top). The Ring is Engraved with a Runic Inscription.

So, I am just curious does anyone know anything more about this item.

- Was it issued prior to the Release of the Films or was it issued in celebration of the Films.

- Was it indeed limited to 200.

- What price it retailed at. etc. etc.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks.

I checked my copies of the two Clowes Variants and there is indeed a difference in colour between the dustjackets (I would say, a more than subtle difference - it is quite noticeable).

Variant 1 (Top Stain, Headband, Cloth Boards) has a deep Navy Coloured Dustjacket.

Variant 2 (No Top Stain, No Headband, Paper Over Boards) has a lighter Navy Coloured Dustjacket with a Slight Purple tinge to it.

The Colour of the Variant 2 Dustjacket also matches that of the Billings Printing.

There is no fading to any of the dustjackets.

The First Edition of 250 are numbered on the Back Cover. The Latest Edition of 100 Copies are not numbered at all. I will have a look later to see if there are any other differences.

I am not 100% sure of the Priority. Deagol may have a better idea. I would guess that the 250 Limited Numbered Run was the real First Printing.

The reason being is that a few years ago, Wim had one of the 50 Print Run for sale which I tried to purchase. But upon ordering, he informed me that about moving and losing the booklets. That was sometime in 2005 I think. So I would guess that the 250 Print Run is the First Run as the last ones available for sale (before the current 100 run) was from the 50 print run. Hope that makes sense!!! But as I mentioned, I may not be 100% correct. I am using a bit of guesswork.

I would be pretty certain that the one on Ebay was from the latest print run of 100 copies and indeed a rare mistake by dunedain8.

Still, it is a great item for those interested in the Publication History of Tolkien/The Lord of the Rings.
