Hi Khamul,

In reply to your first post. I don't think I have review copies from any of the earlier editions, but have a few from more recent publications (all with review slips):

1992 Tolkien Family Album
1998 Silmarillion, illustrated by Ted Namsmith
2002 History of Middle Earth - 3 Vols Large Print
2007 Hobbit 50th Anniversary
2007 Children of Hurin (US Edition).

And of lesser interest, review copies of various books of Tolkien Criticism.

In reply to your second question, I always assumed (though am not absolutely 100% certain) that review copies were just part of the First Print Run and as such no different from a regular first print and just sent out for review prior to the actual publication date.

Remy.

For the UK HoME Series, I don't think it is possible to distinguish between Book Club and Trade Editions for Volumes 6 thru 12. Book Club Editions of Vols 1-5 are easily distinguished.

Some Book Club Editions even had printed prices on the Dustwrapper (to the best of my knowledge), so even sticking to collecting the Priced Copies does guarantee that they did not originate from the Book Club.

Possibly (maybe someone can contradict this) the only way to absolutely guarantee that any of Vols 6-12 was a Trade Edition is to buy copies with added Price Labels. But I don't think all of Vols 6-12 had price labels added at some stage. I have seen copies of Vol 9 with Publisher Price Labels and I think I remember seeing one on Vol 12.

So basically, for Vols 6-12, I don't think it really matters to anybody if the book came from a Book Club or not - as nobody can tell the difference.

Just my 2 cents on how I understand this at the moment. Maybe someone else can provide futher information.

Hi,

It appears you have a 3rd Impression from 1963.

As to value, unfortunately looks like not very much. There are a number of copies on ABE as follows:

I haven't examined the text at all and am not sure if any of the text has been revised.

But as to physical size. It is indeed quite a bit larger than the earlier edition. It measures 7.75 Inches x 5 Inches x 2 Inches and has 894 Numbered Pages.

It matches the New Children of Hurin, 3 Vol Lord of the Rings, Alan Lee Illustrated Hobbit and the History of the Hobbit Paperbacks (8 Paperbacks in all) - All published on the same day.

Hi Jeremy,

Excellent detective work! Many Thanks indeed for that. That certainly makes a lot of sense and explains why I had not come across one before.

I actually acquired it from a UK Seller. Maybe it was someone working in Harpercollins at the time who decided to keep one for themselves. In any case, it is great to know the background to the item. I am very grateful for your time spent in researching this. I could not find anything at all online about it myself.

Many Thanks Again!!!
