Thanks for posting the link wellinghall.

Just as an added bit of information to the Elaine Griffiths mention:- Prior to the Bonhams Auction, a number of books from the estate of Elaine Griffiths were sold via ABE.

The only Tolkien related one that I saw was a copy of a 1992 Tolkien Family Album which was inscribed by Priscilla Tolkien 'In Loving Memory of Sixty Years of Friendship with the Tolkien Family'.

The UK first printings of Volumes 1,2,3 and 4 had dyed top edges. I think all/most of the Reprints of Vols 1-4 also had dyed top edges (that is the reprints published under George Allen & Unwin). I think the dyed top edges ceased sometime around 1987 when the HOME Volumes were published under the Unwin Hyman Label.

Best of Luck putting a set of these together!!

Hi Marek,

Fantastic Site! Sincere thanks for making this available. It is the best site I have seen so far for Foreign Translations of the Hobbit. Congratulations! It must have taken a lot of work getting it all together and scanning all those illustrations. Very much appreciate your efforts and for making it available to all.

Just one (small) suggestion. It would be nice to include the ISBN's of the books (where available).

Many Thanks Again, Great Site!!!
Best Wishes,
Remy.

Indeed, quiet everywhere. I have not bought much in the last month either. Seems to be a lack of rare/scarce/quality/interesting editions coming to market at the moment. Most of my purchases have just been New Books (mostly criticism). Though there are a few interesting new releases (and some more to come in the following months).

I suppose with the increase in the number of Tolkien Collectors over th e past number of years, it is inevitable that the scarcer editions will just become even more scarce as time goes on (and the books get placed permanently in collections).

Maybe if the Hobbit Movies become certain, it may encourage more books back onto the market.

In the current economic climate also, I suppose not too many seller's want to sell quality books into a poor market.

No idea what I am talking about really. Just speculating out of boredom.......

For the review copies (Advance Reading Copies or ARCs for short) that I have seen for the HOME series, they are mostly non-finished text bound in simple paper wrappers - clearly sent out much further in advance than the Silmarillion copy I saw.

Hi Rowns,

I presume technically speaking, that these would really be Uncorrected Proof Copies as opposed to Review Copies.

I do not know the strict definitions, and although a 'Proof' copy may be sent out for review, I would consider a 'Review' copy to be identical to the regular trade edition, whereas a 'Proof' copy may be bound differently and have many textual differences - and be an earlier state of the edition?

But I would think it important to distinguish between a 'Review' and 'Proof' Copy.

Have I got this right or are there circumstances whereby an ARC would have textual differences to the First Trade Printing?

Remy.
