Lot 473 – Tolkien (J.R.R.) - The Hobbit

Tolkien (J.R.R.) - The Hobbit, or, There and Back Again, first edition, first impression with plain plates , frontispiece, plate and 8 illustrations by Tolkien, map endpapers, original decorative cloth , slightly cocked, corners a little bumped, otherwise excellent, first issue dust-jacket with ms. correction on lower inside flap , spine very slightly darkened , spine ends and corners a little chipped, small 1/5" portion of loss to head of spine, closed tear to head of lower panel with tape repair to verso, a few small chips and short closed tears to head and foot, insect damage to head of upper flap, split to foot of upper fore-edge , 8vo, 1937. Despite the defects mentioned, this is still a very good, unsophisticated example of the dust-jacket with both panels bright.

Tolkien (J.R.R.) - The Lord of the Rings, 3 vol., first editions, vol.1 & 3 first impressions, vol.2 second impression, vol.3 third state with sagging text and printed 4 on p.49, folding maps, light spotting and browning to endpapers, abrasion marks from removal of tape to pastedowns, original cloth, light rubbing to head and foot, dust-jackets, fading to spines, spine ends and corners a little chipped, a few short closed tears and accompanying creases to head and foot, some surface soiling, light rubbing to extremities, still a very good set overall, 8vo, 1954-55.
