Personally, I'm quite looking forward to this release; primarily in terms of content.

In terms of price; if HarperCollins think they can shift 500 copies, at (say) £350 (even if it's over a few years), then that will probably be what they'll plumb for. CoH, with all the discounting has shifted. But it hardly does HarperCollins any good (as David Brawn alluded to) to flood the market with Super Deluxe signed Tolkien titles.

I think a run of 250, with the £350 tag would work for HarperCollins. Collectors would obviously prefer a 250 run with a £250 price tag. CoH with discount (30%) was available at £245; & this was even more favourable for US buyers -so I think £250 would be fair, considering the non-ME nature of the subject.

We'll see...

...& with Amazon owning ABEbooks as well; and Beren in league with HarperCollins! -there's nowhere for the poor (average) collector to turn to for unbiased advice...

Indeed Trotter: It could well be either of the 1rst states (domestic or export); altho' the Billing copy DJs always seem to hold up that little bit better than the Clowes Export copies I think. The cloth is also quite dark in the picture; so I'd guess its a Billing copy too.

The nonsense about the spine (incidently the auction has been pulled) is just that: nonsense. It is clearly not red; altho' nobody is saying the jacket doesn't look otherwise Fine. But £400+!!? You could go on ABE now and buy a Metheun copy for that price. Mad is the word...

[If anyone notices this new jacketed version could they post news of it in this thread?]

TL. It must be for sure that there are other books coming out this year... For example this year it was 70 years ago that Tolkien published "The Reeve’s Tale" ( Version Prepared for Summer Diversions, Oxford), maybe it would be great to have such a rare piece republished? Farmer Giles of Ham will become 60 this year and would be nice to have in a 'special' edition!

DB. To mark its 60th anniversary, Farmer Giles of Ham - the 50th Anniversary Edition with notes by Hammond & Scull - has been reprinted in hardback with a new jacket - only 500 copies have been printed
