Sorry, buyers doing homework? What about sellers? Ebay seems to be teaming with sellers who are operating at a level below that of the aforementioned car boot sale. Tolkien has to be one of the best known fantasy writers of our time. What excuse could you possibly have, with access to the internet, for not looking up when the author died? No excuse... but pretty funny none the less .

I think this is a tricky area to pin down because the difference (can) be so subtle (and almost all description has used Hammond as a starting point). I have ~20 GA&U variants (although obviously not that many 1st/1st variants); and describing the shades is very subjective. I made a table for them all at one point; will post if I have anything worthwhile to add...

The seller ended this listing early because of a forgery in the listing.

On Feb-11-08 at 07:38:52 PST, seller added the following information:

SORRY GUYS, I HAVE JUST BEEN INFORMED THAT J.R.R. TOLKIEN DIED BEFORE THIS BOOK WAS PUBLISHED!!!!!! THIS MUST BE A COPY OF HIS SIGNATURE, PUBLISHED BY THE AUTHOR. I THOUGHT I HAD FOUND A REAL TREASURE AT THAT BOOK SALE WHERE I FOUND THIS BOOK.

Tolkien moved into publishing (his own signature) in the 1980's after finishing (to his own personal bewilderment) The Silmarillion...
