Indeed Trotter: It could well be either of the 1rst states (domestic or export); altho' the Billing copy DJs always seem to hold up that little bit better than the Clowes Export copies I think. The cloth is also quite dark in the picture; so I'd guess its a Billing copy too.
The nonsense about the spine (incidently the auction has been pulled) is just that: nonsense. It is clearly not red; altho' nobody is saying the jacket doesn't look otherwise Fine. But £400+!!? You could go on ABE now and buy a Metheun copy for that price. Mad is the word... BH

TL. It must be for sure that there are other books coming out this year... For example this year it was 70 years ago that Tolkien published "The Reeve’s Tale" ( Version Prepared for Summer Diversions, Oxford), maybe it would be great to have such a rare piece republished? Farmer Giles of Ham will become 60 this year and would be nice to have in a 'special' edition! BH

This is a great thread idea! We should save this 'bin' for all the nonsense that eBay throws up. Here are a couple of other seriously confusing auctions...
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil 1962 2nd imp. 'Good' The Silmarillion 'Probably the best copy we have seen' Saga of King Heidrek the Wise LotRs One Volume Hb 'Possible this is the 9th Impression 1971' In fact, I'm going to have to have a look at some of these again. Perhaps they are signed copies or something... BH
