It's exactly the same.
Seems like the seller wanted to make yet more money on a first impression of The Hobbit by sticking a signature on the title page. A bit greedy, isn't it?
On the other hand, it makes it also more appealing to collectors and a first impression with a signature of Tolkien (even when it's pasted on the book) is obviously much more attractive...

If my memory serves me correctly, the winner was Valhalla??

Yes, I recall it was someone with Valhalla or Walhalla in its name...
I have seen that copy of Lays of Beleriand too. I even was the first bidder, but because I went on holiday, I couldn't check it, and I was overbid when I came back (and lost the auction of course)...

I'm quite unhappy about this!

The first one:
This drawing and signature are certainly fake.
If you look at Lee's other drawings, they are much more detailed (and a lot better shaped!).
Also this drawing is 'rough' drawed, with almost no shadows but under his neck. And that shadowy spot isn't the way Lee draws his shadows; he draws them soft and with almost no clear lines in it...

The second one: a very nice example of a genuine drawing and signature

Conclusion: I'd rather have the second one than the first one

They could run off some HC bookplates with numbering, and post them out to us all. I'm sure they still have a log of who ordered first etc, so that the appropriate number could be sent to the correct buyer.

You should apply at HC

That would be a good solution, but I think HC won't do that. They have their money and for them, that's what counts... Unless they are scared they will lose customers because most books on tolkien.co.uk can be buyed at Amazon, except for the 'exclusive' editions.
And I they mainly aim at Tolkien collectors with their website... Most of them know that the exclusive editions can't be bought somewhere else, so if they really want the edition, they will have to buy it at tolkien.co.uk , whatever the customer service may be...

Yesterday, my copy has arrived. It looks very good, and the inside (and outside too of course) is of high quality. The pages are quite strong but make it a bit hard to read though... But I'm not going to read in this one!

There was a cut in the envelope, but no damage was made to the book or slipcase because of that.
