There's a typo in the title of your thread. This is clearly a Tolkein letter, as the author states multiple times.

If I recall correctly the set your friend has is a 1930s set, while the sets with the other image are 1940s. I've had a 1930s set, but as it was incomplete (booklets missing) I sold it again. I have a complete 1940s set though.

I bought it only recently, because I was interested in the Middle English edition of Sir Orfeo. However, I have now been able to obtain PDF copies of the articles in Tolkien Studies I-VII via my university library.
Being a student ànd a Tolkien collector, I live a very poor life, so the choice to sell my hard copy of TS:Vol. I to fund purchases of Tolkien's primary works was quickly made.
