Thanks a lot for posting these

I was comparing the first printing of The Hobbit with the pictures shown here, and even though the limitation numbers do not appear, the ISBN number is different, so must be a later printing.

2004 1st Printing ISBN 0 00 711835 X
2012 Later Printing ISBN 978 0 00 711835 9

The bigger giveaway is that the later editions of LOTR, The Hobbit and Silmarillion are all printed by "Printing Express, Hong Kong".

This is from the Greisinger Museum, perhaps you see a difference here

Now we know where all the edition went, that were sold the last months!!

It makes for an impressive picture, but at the same time -- what a dull collection...

But you are missing that it is a limited edition

It appears that if lots of idiots people, take them up, then all of New Zealand will disappear and you have missed your chance, it is limited supply and if New Zealand no longer exists?

I'm in the process of moving to New Zealand at the moment and can confirm supply of New Zealand is unlikely to run out. However, if it does, Australia is just next door and most people don't know the difference anyway.

Yes, despite the lack of an impression number for The Hobbit, I certainly wasn't assuming it was a 1st.

Understood. It's a pity HC have left the impression number off the reprint as it just causes confusion.

I was actually going to mention that --but wasn't sure exactly what I'd seen. The one in Waterstones, I handled, had no indication of reprint; hence my statement above. It was, however, slightly different looking, as you say --the slipcase was definitely more green looking; a kind of deeper green. I didn't think anything of it at the time.

So, do we know any of the differentiating points between impressions, or even how many times it's likely to have been reprinted?

BH

Exactly right. The green is significantly brighter and the paper less textured than the genuine 1st.
