Are uncorrected proofs from the HoMe scarce or very valuable? I'm just asking because I found a copy of The Lost Road (American edition) that is an uncorrected proof.

Has anyone ever seen this copy of the Hobbit before? It has no date in the book, but does state "Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston / The Riverside Press / Cambridge." Obviously, it is an American edition. It is also an ex-library copy. Can anyone tell me anything else about it?

Hey, thanks a lot! I'll be purchasing a set of all the back issues of The Tolkien Collector whenever they become available. I also own a copy of The Return of the King with similar markings--no dates and only "Printed in Great Britain" on the verso of the title page. I'd like to figure out the impression of this one as well if anyone has that info available.

I found a first edition, later printing copy of the Two Towers (American edition) that lacks any type of date inside. It contains a dust jacket with the $5.00 price. Does anyone know how to determine which printing it is?

This is a pretty good deal; you could pick up an expensive book you've been wanting to buy--Tolkien or otherwise!
