Remy - Thanks for the info, it is much appreciated.

A couple of questions if I may -

On the Bakshi 2nd Impression does it say 'Second Impression 1979', or 'Reprinted 1979'?

Similarly, on the Baynes 4th Impression does it have '4th Impression 1982', or 'Reprinted 1979, 19??, 1982'.

I am working on a LotR update at TolkienBooks.net but I am struggling with the 1978 Unwin Paperbacks Edition.

I have gathered some information, but it doesn't fit together very well - see below.

Does you have a copy? If so I would love to hear some details - year, impression number, cover price, etc.

Stated 1st Impression (Bakshi cover): £2.95*
Stated 1st Impression (Baynes cover): £5.50**
Stated 3rd Impression (1979): £4.95***
Stated 3rd Impression (1982): £5.50
From promotional leaflet (1978): £3.95^
From promotional leaflet (1980): £3.75^^
From promotional leaflet (1981): £4.95
From promotional leaflet (1982): £5.50

* Dated 1978 but issued in 1979. It seems odd that although issued in 1979, this film tie-in edition was cheaper than the first issue of 1978. Discounted to promote sales?

** The original [Bakshi?] wrappers appear to have been removed and replaced with Baynes illustrated wrappers bearing the 1982 price.

*** The price suggests that this was issued in 1981 rather than 1979. The copy seen was purchased in December 1981. It is unclear whether the original wrappers are in place.

^ Copies priced at £3.95 have not been seen.

^^ Copies priced at £3.75 have not been seen.

The lack of known copies of Sir Orfeo may be due in part to the fact that Tolkien's name does not appear in it, so very few people would know what they were looking at.

I think that the other reason the Sir Orfeo tends to get over looked is because it is an edited text rather than an original composition.

I only know of one copy offered for sale and that was quite some time ago.

BTW
My article at TolkienBooks.net on Songs for the Philologists was updated recently - it now has a complete listing of the contents, a couple of new images and few extra snippets of information supplied by the lucky owner of one copy.

I can't remember who told me that, but I am very glad to be told that I am wrong. I have updated the page.

I met Åke very briefly at Oxonmoot when he was buying a Serbo-Croat translation of The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun from Daerons Books. He had the collector's gleam in his eyes!

I see now how to get notifications for the forums, but it would be handy to have similar for different sections of the guide... a weekly or monthly digest maybe rather than notifications for each update.

Feel free to experiment on my email address.
