The signature in the 1998 deluxe edition is very scruffy - he must have been having a bad day!

It looks ok to me - see this signature from 1992 which is definitely genuine:
![]() The signed cards were given out to attendees of a banquet at the 1992 Centenary conference. CT was at the banquet (sadly too many people there for everybody to meet him) and a couple of days before he read 'The New Shadow' (the unfinished sequel to LotR) at the Sheldonian Theatre - Awesome!

It says nothing that will be new to you, and is absolute chock full of errors and inaccuracies. It covers books, Tolkien Society magazines, Bakshi film ephemera, figures, gaming and recordings, but none in enough detail to be of any use.
It claims that there is a book by Tolkien called Studies in Old English that sells for a few hundred pounds - have you ever heard of it...???!!! It also mentions a book called Collectable Treasure from the Works of J.R.R. Tolkien by JamesTomlinson. Has anybody heard of this? There is nothing online that I can find.

Below are the lot descriptions from the Sotheby's catalogue for 14-15 Dec 1992. The quantities differ slightly to those given in the newspaper articles.
139. There and Back Again, a Map of Bilbo's Journey through Eriador and Rhovanion. Large coloured map with 10 circular illustrations depicting scenes from the journey, signed by the author and artist, Tolkien's signature smudged, framed and glazed, 487x702mm.

I think it might be a good idea, but I doubt I would use it if I had to pay for the privilege. Adverts would be better - as long as they are not intrusive pop-ups.
