This is the most difficulty I have ever had in obtaining a book. They share ISBNs with two other editions so searching for them is difficult. Its thrilling to hold it. I am more excited about this than my first edition Hobbit.

>I am not sure this was ever released by HM as a hardcover to the trade - the only copies I am aware of are all trade paperbacks.

My basis for thinking there was a regular hardback with this cover was the entry in US Tolkien Guide: http://tolkien.skwishmi.com/guide/1vol.html

Its notable though that the stock photo she uses has the gilded badge that promotes the upcoming movies. The stated issue date of 1993 is obviously far too early for mentioning the movies. That clue along the fact that I have not been able to find a non-book club version suggests that it may just be a mistake on that website. Or they could be very scarce.

The ISBN in the US Tolkien guide brings up an entry for the book on amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-J-R-Tolkien/dp/0739409557

But the image is wrong.

On Abe it brings up the cover with the movie badge promoting the new movie:

https://www.abebooks.com/9780739409558 ... gs-Tolkien-0739409557/plp

>It is quite possible that HM gave the materials to a book club for them to produce a hardcover version of

There is a for sure a book club state. I have one personally. The ISBN in it matches this book club edition:

https://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Tril ... r=8-1&keywords=0739408259

and the books seem identical except for the cover art.

I appreciate it. Thank you.

In general, this is the edition cover I am talking about :

http://images.paperbackswap.com/l/81/4681/9780395974681.jpg

Here is the situation: My copy has a round gilded "badge" on the cover that advertises the upcoming movies and is also a book club edition. Scanning ebay and other images online I have not seen one that doesn't have the movie advertisement or that isn't a book club edition.

If you have a copy without the advertising gilded shape or that isn't a book club I would very much appreciate your help. What would be supper helpful is images of the front and back covers. Pictures of the board and spine and a picture of the copyright page. If possible I'd also appreciate your permission to use the images in an online bibliography until I can acquire my my own copy. But mostly, I just need evidence that they exist.

Thanks!

LOL. It turns out I already owned one of these. I have no memory of buying it.
