"Many people have enjoyed the Tolkien Weekends at Sarehole Mill over the last eight years. Though the name has changed to the 'Middle-earth Weekend,' all the usual attractions for fans of JRR Tolkien can be found. This year’s weekend will focus on 'Myths and Monsters' mixing Tolkien’s local connections, his translation and academic works on Beowulf and one of his earliest essays in story writing which featured 'a great green dragon'."

There will be dragons patrolling the field and, no doubt, serving as targets for those who wish to emulate Bard’s defeat of Smaug with the Bowmen of Swanshurst. Other attractions include a falconry display, rope and food historians and in the Mill café there is an exhibition by Bob Blackham (author of The Roots of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth) of Postcards from The Shire. Middle-earth Weekend 2008 will be held at Sarehole Mill and Recreation Ground, Cole Bank Road, Hall Green, Birmingham on May 17 & 18, 2008. Thanks to our friend Ian from the Tolkien Society for news about the event!"

I've started reading Douglas Anderson's collection Tales Before Narnia - fantasy stories and poems that might have inspired CS Lewis. It includes Tolkien's poem The Dragon's Visit - but interestingly, not the version in Winter's Tales and The Young Magicians. I guess that this is the original version, which appeared in The Oxford Magazine in the 1930s.

There are other gems in the book, such as an E Nesbit story reaches a magical land by entering the wardrobe in the spare room ...

Hello everyone

I was lucky enough to acquire copy number 1 of the super deluxe edition of "Children of Hurin". I could be persuaded to sell this, for the right price.

If you're interested before it goes on eBay, please drop me a line, to:
andrew at avro707 dot force9 dot co dot uk, saying how much you would be prepared to pay before p&p (which I will charge at cost). If we can find some way to do it without PayPal or bank charges, I'll be all the happier.

Thanks

wellinghall
