Hello Collector
I am sceptical about these letters as the sellers story just didnt make sense. Ask yourself - why would Tolkien compose letters in Milford to a number of people and then leave them in the loft? Would you do that?

I have never heard of Allington Antiquarian Books but assume you have a connection?

I appreciate that there are experts in handwriting and indeed this is one way of establishing providence but more often than not i find gut instinct kicks in and when the story and facts dont add up then something is wrong.

To be honest i trust the guys who post on this site more than anyone.

I look forward to finding my sleeping book with a genuine tolkien signature in it. I guess my odds are fairly good as there seems to be a lot out there.

An interesting chat indeed.

Thanks for that - Not read Medum Aevum, I will have to try and gt a copy.
Yes it is the off print - flimsy phamflet type. Quite rare as i understand.
Thanks

Hello all
My first posting so here goes.

One of the stars in my collection is a 1925 copy of The Devils Coach Horses. It is a great read although I have to store safely as so delicate. I have tried to do some research into it as a friend told me it was partially this writing that inspired Tolkien to create the Balrog.

Does anyone know anything more about this or can point me in the right direction. Thanks

Hello collector .Welcome to the forum.
I am sorry but you have missed the point here. We know Tolkien went on holiday to Milford and doctor was Higgins at one stage in life but why would he write letters, not post them and then leave in the loft so his cleaner/ friends could gather just before house was demolished, along with signed books? Or was the signed Hobbit recently sold by said seller a 'sleeper' book- i just cant remeber his story changed that much!
How are you so sure they are original ? You sound very informative ? Have you done deep study on it?

This item sold for over £500 to someone with more money than sense. I will give it three weeks before we see another 'exciting' item from this seller.
