Can't say I've seen a Tolkien signature with what looks like an 'X' type mark where the 'k' should be. I think it's a fake.

Hi laurel.

I hadn't heard that The Devil's Coach-horses had anything to do with balrogs; though in his book 'The Road to Middle earth', Prof.Tom Shippey speculates something of the kind, to do with another of Tolkien's writings: Sigelwara land, in Medum Aevum (1932, 1934).

The Devil's Coach-horses was first published in 'The Review of English Studies Vol.I, no.3, (Sidgewick and Jackson, July 1925). There's also an off-print; is this the one you have?

There was also one dated 1925, printed by Edwards Bros, Jersey, but acording to Hammond's bibliography, this is printed in Monotype Bembo , which was not cut till 1929.

I have a question -

>Festival in the Shire is a three day event that will cater to the diverse interests of collectors, academics and those who simply enjoyed the books and films. It will be held in the heart of ‘Tolkien country’, Machynlleth the ancient historical capital of Wales, with its rich Celtic traditions and stunning location in the hills.<

Can I respectfully ask - in what way is Machynlleth 'the heart of Tolkien country?

'Rare' is one over-used and frequently inaccurate description. Another is 'vintage', or sometimes 'early' when applied to a copy of The Hobbit produced in the 1970s.
