Yes, IIRC the expert said the auction estimate would be 2-3,000 pounds. An insurance estimate ought to be double that, ie what one would expect to pay in a shop. Except that some dealers, esp. two I can think of in the UK, would have the leaf with the inscription replaced, and add 10,000 to the price!

Trotter - yes, you're right; according to Hammond, the Clowes variant does come with either a stained or unstained top edge. I have many copies of Sil - and all the Clowes ones are unstained. 9I also have one printed by Unwin Brothers, Woking; but the jacket on that copy is very sunned) .

I agree that £10.00 is a fair price for any 1st ed. copy of the A&U Silm. Anything in the hundreds ridiculous. Wonder if that ebay vendor would like to give me a couple of hundred each for some of mine?

It looks ok to me - I've seen several of Ted's 'studies' before (I 've bought two of them). But $2000.00 seems a tad high.

I couldn't make it to the book launch, but a friend of mine went, and got Alan Lee's sig. on the bookplate (and Alan signed to me personally on the title page). Adam Tolkien also kindly signed. Adam and Alan also signed my copy of the Waterstone's magazine, on p.49 - 'Tolkien's Swansong'.

I'm sure I must have bought my friend a drink on the strength of that...

"And with all the photo's, they still don't show the most important part of the copyright page ... Billing or Clowes?"

- the top edge is blue - so I'd guess it's Billings. (The Clowes copies are unstained)

Btw - Trotter - can I ask, what was the rare item you just bought?
