Last time I checked Thornton had two copies for sale for less than GBP500:

#463 £ 425 (better slipcase)
#516 £ 375

Unfortunately the seller retracted his offer. I didn't even see any photos...

I recently purchased the deluxe limited edition of The Children of Húrin from HarperCollins (#230 much to my surprise). Being very impressed by it's quality I was considering purchasing the deluxe limited edition of The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún too.

However, after reading through some old threads on this forum I've learned that this book doesn't sell so well (presumably). Yet it is still listed for £350 at tolkien.co.uk. I really want the book but I don't want to pay £350 if I can get it for half that price two years from now.

So my question is if anyone can make an educated guess on what will happen with this book if it keeps selling like this (max 25 copies per year?).

I worry especially that they will eventually just purge the complete stock and I'm missing out on a potential great book.

Thanks for the extremely detailed info on the price history of the HoMe series and for confirming that the seller is probably legit. I might take his offer if I can talk the price a little down :) This is a very useful site btw. I've been going though some of the older threads and learning a lot. Thanks again.

I was wondering what would be a reasonable price for the following book:

The Peoples of Middle-earth. Edited by Christopher Tolkien. London: HarperCollinsPublishers, [September] 1996. xiii, 482 pp., [1] plate. (The History of Middle-earth; 12) ISBN 0-261-10337-7. Hardback in dustwrapper. Not illustrated.

Looking through AbeBooks I see prices from GBP240 all the way up to GBP1000+.

Recently a copy went away on Ebay for GBP351.02. This one was in Very Good to Near Fine condition judging by the photos I was send. It had a printed price of GBP25 on the dustwrapper and was not price clipped.

I didn't win this auction and now the seller (100% feedback) has contacted me stating that he is sorry I didnt win the bidding and that his brother is willing to sell a similar copy for GBP351. Sounds a little bit fishy to me :)

Anyway despite the inflated prices listed at Abebooks my guess this book is worth anywhere between GBP200-300. What do you think?
