Thanks Rhun-Stone, you're right the artwork is lovely, quite modern looking for a 1960's book. It will be interesting to see what they are worth to someone. Hopefully they will go to a true fan/collector. Saw this set today - am I missing something here haha?:

On Ebay now is an auction for the 1960 LotR Trilogy Readers Union Edition, which was only sold to members - not the general public! Excellent condition - and better condition than others for sale, plenty of photos to see in supersize format.
