mmmm The Da Vinci code @ 80million
A good book dont get me wrong but not 20% less sales than The Hobbit still as you say it must be right its Wikipedia

I agree, a best-seller that has been pretty much constantly in print for 75 years (barring The Luftwaffe and paper shortages), must be a much better seller than Dan Brown's first book

Not sure, the first print run of Dan Brown's books (& J. K.) are massive, and dwarf anything in regard to Tolkien. I know you weren't talking about J. K. Rowling, but the print runs were like 10 million copies for some of her books. Tolkien never had anything like this.
