And then there is the misprint copy of "Black and White Ogre Country" that he has listed for GBP 125.

"Gilt on book spine is double stamped, a rare misprint"

Last time I looked, misprints do not add to the value of a book. We aren't talking rare stamps here...

I don't think that's so - is it? Tree and Leaf was traditionally only LBN and OFS, until 1988 when Mythopoeia was added (and I'm not sure if it still is included, nowadays).

Beorhtnoth appears inThe Tolkien Reader; and also 'Poems and Stories'. I have a Harper Collins ed; with an Alan Lee illo on the dustwrapper. My favourite versions of Beorhtnoth are to be found in Essays and Studies 1953, and a 'special' - that is, a booklet pub. by Anglo-Saxon books in 1991 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Maldon. (bet Mr. Faith hasn't seen or heard of one of these, either). I bought that at the Tolkien Centenary Conference, held at Keble College Oxford in August '92. where we delegates received as a gift from Christopher a tape recording of Beorhtnoth read by JRR, with CT reading 'Beorhtnoth's Death' and 'Ofermod'.

And there's a special place in my heart for the de luxe Poems and Stories, ill. by Pauline Baynes with two-colour illustrations. Beautiful.

p.s. I also have a set like the one Faith is selling; in very tidy condition.

Sorry for the double post - back to Mr Faith. He really needs to invest in a copy of Hammond, if he wants to be taken seriously. trouble is, he's one of these know-alls who thinks he doesn't have to be told anything.

As can be seen on his Facebook page -

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Festiva ... ien-inspired/149452046749

- which he uses shamelessly as an ad. for his businesses. (He also runs a camping site in Wales). In one of his latest facebook posts he's griping about facebook changing the rules about commercial pages such as his -

- "Don't forget to tell your friends to become fans of this page. They've changed how you can contact people on Facebook and we can no longer invite people direct. Thanks.

... They changed things to force commercial organizations to buy click ads, these little things you see to the right, as a means for getting new fans. So much for free Facebook. That's why we don't allow commercial postings to our wall unless you pay for them. Non-commercial can post what they like provided it fits the themes. Thanks for your understanding.

The sad thing is, there are folks out there who do follow this man's guidance through Tolkien bibliography, and believe what they read. No-one challenges him. Or if they do, I guess we'd never hear about it - faith has a habit of deleting messages he doesn't like, eg on his page for his ill-starred 'festival' in Wales in 2010.

On the other hand, he might take notice of someone who knows what they're talking about, and in a way that could be worse. I don't correct Faith when he comes out with howlers - for one thing it would take too long, but mainly because I don't want to become his free advisory service.

garm

You are right in that it is not in the very early paperback Tree and Leaf paperbacks, but I think it is included in all the UK paperback Tree and Leaf's, published from the 1970's, including the latest copy from HarperCollins.

Have a look at the listing below

http://www.tolkien.co.uk/titles/41550 ... r-r-tolkien-9780007105045

and thanks to Deagol it appears that there are two variants of this boxset (I suspect Mr Faith's set is the more common set).

I don't think that listing is very helpful to your case. For one thing, it says this -

... Lastly, and published for the very first time, we are treated to the translation of Tolkien’s account of the Battle of Maldon, known as The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth.

This in a book published in 2009, 56 years after Beorhtnoth was first published.

As for 'most paperback editions since the 1970s' I can find two from the 70s in the list on Deagol's page with, and several without, Beorhtnoth. I don't think that adds up to 'most' copies.

You are right, I should have said from 1976

HarperCollins should know better as to when a book is published

I don't think Mr Faith cares less.

And out of interest How does The Professor have multiple Facebook pages. This makes me so cross

Harper Collins - indeed anyone who feels themselves qualified to comment on Tolkien's 'Homecoming' - ought to know already that it is not a

'translation of Tolkien’s account of the Battle of Maldon'.

Someone pointed out this thread on Mr Faith's Facebook advertising page, and in the interests of honesty the post was deleted and now it states "Please do not post links to other Tolkien information sites without advanced permission. Thanks."

"advanced permission", indeed. I guess you just need "normal permission" if you want to post something that he agrees with.
