Here's a Hobbit -
Thing is, the vendor seems to assume that it's a 5th impression because it has the revised text. But as all subsequent printings have the same text, this seems like something of a leap to me.
Given that the book has some pages missing, and the fact that the cloth binding looks to me more like 1960s than 1950s, I'm surprised to see the way the bidding is going.
Finally, here's the answer to a question from an enquirer -
'Hi, Thanks for the email. I have just counted the pages & there is only 2 pages that are missing, the right hand side of the map & the page with printing details dates etc (please see photos already attached) although these pages are missing it does not effect the reading of the book as it has the complete content. The house we were contracted to clear out belonged to a book collector & this book was kept in the section labeled ''rare''! this a great chance to own a piece of history, happy bidding!'

Spot the problem, the pictures provided do not show one area of the book
Like all his books this seller describes it as
"VERY SOUGHT AFTER AND COLLECTABLE"
and
"worthy of any collection
would make an excellent addition to any collector / fans collection
The spine has had some attempted repair work done with some white tape as per pics, appears to be ex-libris with some stamps throughout, foxing to page edges and some rubbing to cover. some spine lean."
"judge for yourself from pics as a picture paints a 1000 words"
We can't do this as he not provided pictures of the Spine or any pictures showing library stamps
"A VERY RARE CHANCE TO GRAB SUCH A COLLECTABLE EDITION
A TRUE COLLECTORS ITEM
VERY COLLECTABLE AND A GREAT INVESTMENT"
Sorry, but it is not collectable, or a true collectors item or has any value
"Returns:No returns accepted"

Indeed they have looked at the important things, such as a new logo and have lost the capital on Bay.
I am hoping that we can shut this thread down now
Oh, not just yet

What are we to make of this, I wonder?

The spiel says the drawing is on parchment - which I doubt. What's the significance of the date, I wonder? And the item was found in a house clearance on the east coast.
And finally - how do they come up with this price?

Here's a hobbit with a bit of hype -
- Bound by 'the world's greatest binders', that is, the Chelsea Bindery, and on offer at an eye-watering 18,000 USD. To put things in perspective - the Chelsea Bindery is owned by Peter Harrington bookdealers. They have one for sale at 7500 GBP (somewhere between 11,000 and 12,000 USD).

There's no doubt the Chelsea Bindery do excellent work, and if I were to buy a re-bound book, I'd definitely look at their output. But for me, there's nothing to beat Bayntun's - Peter Harrington's have one of theirs too, for the same price. I think it's lovely.

This guy never fails to disappoint! He needs a thread all on his own.

"Copies this clean seldom become available and I know I am asking a premium for it, given it's state, condition and rarity, it's worth what I am asking. Don't believe me? Try and find another one..."
HA HA!
Here are some of the items people have actually bought from this seller:
