One of the strangest ebay auctions I've seen. I am really baffled at this one. High bids too! I read the entire listing out of pure bewilderment, then, to my horror, looked at the item location - it's the town I grew-up in!

Hmmm. I guess next time I need £400 I can dunk a recent copy of the Hobbit in water, then? I cannot see a way that this seller is honestly convinced they have a true first edition.
In this case, I don't see how they can claim it is a £12000 book, very dodgy, they have not posted on ebay that questions have been asked as well

I have tried reporting this Hobbit to Ebay as "Misleading Title" but I don't expect it will have any effect.

The auction has ended because of an Error in the listing, hope they do not relist as a 1st/1st.
I don't understand why SD CoHs keep selling on eBay for more than the 265 pounds that they can still be bought from from the tolkien.co.uk site.
And I really don't get this one below. It has gone up to 345 pounds at the time of writing and still says "reserve not met".

Mind you, I hate Private Auctions, as I have zero faith that it isn't all just shill bidding. I just don't understand why the private auction feature even exists, given that the bidders identities are protected on a normal auction anyway (but you can at least get a bit of data to help determine if they look legit).

What else can you say? It's why we have this wonderful "The Wonders of..." thread!
EDIT: I guess this is the price they were looking for:
Tolkien Children of Hurin Deluxe Signed Limited Edition VERY RARE (Buy-it-now: £475)

"For sale is this rare and highly collectable copy of The Hobbit (There and Back again) by J.R.R. Tolkein.
It is the Eight impression and in very good condition commensurate with its age. The spine and pages are in very good condition with only a tiny amount of foxing at some page edges. There are no rips or tears - this copy has only been read just once."
As discussed before I am not that familiar with J.R.R. Tolkein's works, but I do like his website (shameless plug http://www.tolkeinsociety.org/).
Let's assume this is by J.R.R. Tolkien, how can you state that it has only been read once, how do you know?

This auction contains the one phrase that irks me more than any other:
"However, it has done its job well to protect the book".
Whenever the slipcase or dustjacket is completely shagged, sellers feel the need to write this redundant and pointless phrase....
