I definitely recognize those letters at least.

& again...

I'm pretty sure, when you said you recognised this item, that this was The Hobbit being offered by flatsigned.com at the same time as that signed Silmarillion. The Silmarillion sold, but (since I didn't note the final price) maybe the 'signed' Hobbit failed to meet reserve or something. Much like the LotRs which was relisted multiple times by flatsigned.com.

I think my problem with this auction is that it only has four "Wows" but a large amount of exclamation marks to make up for it

Seriously, I'm sure this has already been mentioned but for an item like this, it would be nice to have the original letter from GA&U and not a copy so you have some confidence that the letters refer to this book, and I would never buy an item listed with "No returns accepted".

Beren should add this to his eBay letter list too! There's no such thing as "No returns accepted". EBay are governed by distance selling rules (or whatever it's called) like any other UK internet seller. My own experience is that sellers stating this are still made to give refunds by eBay if your case is reasonable in any case e.g. it was mis-described. But, I suppose your right Trotter, auctions stating this are to be avoided --you always have to question why the seller would state this.
