I was also negotiating... the only information I was given was that the offer they received was a "four-figure sum, hugely more than we anticipated".
That makes more sense, price-wise. Must admit, a few years back, I'd have killed for a great condition 1st/1st FoTR, and now I wouldn't be terribly fussed (though I would certainly buy one like that if it did go cheaply). For me, the fun is definitely in the chase, and the things that you can't easily acquire by throwing money at the problem. I still want a perfect condition unread 1st impression Pleasure in Reading Hobbit. And then I want to waft it under Trotter's nose :)
Quite rare (the Trinity Forum Leaf by Niggle), but the price seems to be more in "The Wonders of..."
Devastating. I nabbed it a couple days ago (and was thrilled) only to be messaged today by the seller and told that his 'wife had already sold it on another site'.
"wife had already sold it on another site"
Funny how that always seems to happen on items like this, and never on the less obscure items (i.e. the ones where the seller doesn't get contacted by someone offering more money after the auction ends). Sorry that it didn't pan out. There will be another copy at some point.

mmm odd indeed
Did we ever establish how many of these were printed?
Had a couple over the years and I think at one stage we estimated 1 comes up every 18 months (or did I make that up!)
Cant be that many printed though?

No, I don't think we ever had a definitive number. I think I've seen 5 of them come up that I can specifically remember. Once every 18 months sounds about right.
