I think there was some speculation that the Middle-Earth treasury would be re-packaged Deluxe Editions of The Hobbit and LoTR in a box. It appears they will be pocket editions, so I guess much like the faux-seude HMH set, but presumably without the nasty suede.

Probably not one I'll bother picking up. I don't see a lot of utility in the Pocket Editions (and I didn't bother with the last Treasury Boxed set of reprints).

From the BD Entry:

"Deluxe boxed gift set of *pocket edition hardbacks* featuring J.R.R. Tolkien's most popular works, which together tell the tale of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins and of the War of the Ring. When they were first published, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings became instant classics. Treasured by readers young and old, these works of sweeping fantasy, steeped in unrivalled magic and otherworldliness have sold more than 150 million copies around the world. This new boxed set, published to mark the 80th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit, offers readers a new opportunity to discover Tolkien's remarkable world of Middle-earth and to follow the complete story of Bilbo Baggins and the Hobbits' part in the epic quest for the Ring - beginning with Bilbo's fateful visit from Gandalf and culminating in the dramatic climax between Frodo and Gollum atop Mount Doom and Bilbo's departure to the Grey Havens."

Yeah... I guess I can see why they'd want to release LotR in a pocket edition (hasn't yet been done by HC, has it?). I just hope it's the last, I'm not really a fan of them either.

I think this was around the time that DB had said that some of the Hardbacks of HoME were only selling 25 or so copies a year. I wonder if UT had also dropped to such low levels?

HC don't have any information on this edition in their files, http://tolkienbooks.net/php/details.php?reference=64240

Destined to remain a mystery, then.

Can't find my original post on this, but this appears to be the variant edition that I own, slipcase is a different size, and the slipcase has some differences from the more common edition, though all editions are quite rare in a slipcase.

Can you say, offhand, what the basic differences are please?

Ahh, I did wonder it was your variant, Trotter. The colour looked a little different, etc.

Interesting that it is in Australia, given the alternative variants of the illustrated edition have also primarily come from Au.
