The edition in question is as follows:

Another thread about this edition:

Looks like only 269 were actually bound.

It's not a signed edition. Only the first 100 were signed.
Mine is number 176.
However it's in near mint condition. It's been stored carefully for many years and has the original cloth slipcase.

Would I be better off selling it on ebay? Or somewhere else?
If so, what sort of realistic starting price do you think is a good idea?

Welcome to the forum.

As you are aware these books are very scarce, and the edition that you have is probably scarcer than the signed copies, but as it is not signed is not as collectable, so not worth as much.

In the current market, you may get US$1500 or a bit more on eBay for the item, so you may want to start it at that.

Good Luck.

If you do decide to sell on eBay feel free to post the auction on this site.

I notice that you have also asked the same question and I responded on The Lord of the Rings Plaza forums, and you are welcome to have quoted my comments from there in this thread :)

Sound advice from Trotter.

As Wayne makes clear in his post around 270 were bound up. There were definitely 100 signed copies, leaving ~170 unsigned copies. That's the way I read it at the time. Therefore, the unsigned copy while rare is hardly to be described as (I'm looking at you, Trotter!) "probably scarcer than the signed copies".

Having said that, these are pretty damn scarce! Here are some historical eBay prices I've noted, danskmacabre:

2003: £900 [#102, unsigned]
2004: £632 [#11, signed]
2007: £624 [#201, unsigned]
2008: ~£741 [#117, unsigned]
2009: £588 [#205, unsigned, no slipcase]
2012: £400 [#90, signed]
2013: ~£2,729 (EUR 3161) [#28, signed, with orig. mailing box]
2013: £2,250 [#100, Signed]

I have a few notes regarding ABE copies, but it's harder to ascertain whether these sell; or if they do, for what price. Personally I'd throw it on eBay & watch as it probably goes for silly money. Not sure if this is a good time to be selling such an edition, but you can always put a reserve on the auction.

Alternatively, I'd be interested in an unsigned copy!

Add me to the list of interested parties ;) If this goes to eBay I'd love a heads up, or if you plan to sell privately...
