Hi,
I recently bought a 1st edition LotR boxed set with 3 volumes 12th,9th and 9th Impressions. Books and DJ are very good ++ with no chips, sunning, and very minor rubbing. Box is good. Price was £ 350 including the shippping to Germany. Was the price fair? Of course a nice 1st/1st set would have been nicer, but until this happens, this later set looks nice in my collection.

Judging from your description of the set, I would guess it's a fair price (i.e., I would probably have considered buying it myself, as I'm also wanting to buy a first edition set).
The collectors in the UK will probably think it's too expensive, but they find these kind of books at flea markets! ![]()

I too got hold of a nice first edition boxset (1961: 11th; 8th; 8th imp.), back in May. All three volumes are in NF state, with only a little darkening to DJ spines to speak of. The slipcase was also VG or better. I paid £250, including postage (which probably cost the seller about £10). I think most people would expect to pay between ~£200 (if you were lucky, or if the condition wasn't ideal) & £400. I wouldn't personally pay £400+. But if it was an early set & in superb condition I'm sure you could see higher. Of course this is all eBay prices I'm talking about.
So £350 sounds like a decent price. BH

Morgan
your comments made me laugh and this image of car boots/flea markets piled high with Tolkien books came into my mind. Well for a second and then the bubble burst. Price sounds ok - i dont think i would pay that but then again i am fortunate to have brought my set 20+ years ago. They sound in good condition and with the 'Film' approaching I expect all prices will rise for a while now so a shrewd purchase. Well done

Sounds like a nice set, but I personally don't buy impressions that late.
