Located in the UK, with membership worldwide. Founded in 1969, multiple meetings (formal and informal) year round, publishes Amon Hen and Mallorn, all in all a great resource for Tolkien fans and scholars.

This bibliography is intended to augment two previously published bibliographies of Tolkien scholarship, Richard C. West’s Tolkien Criticism: An Annotated Checklist and Judith Johnson’s J. R. R. Tolkien: Six Decades of Criticism, which between them collect Tolkien scholarship from its origins until 1984. We believe we have collected citations for all Tolkien criticism from 1984 through the end of 2000, although it is quite possible that we have missed items.

Vinyar Tengwar (ISSN 1054-7606) is a not-for-profit refereed journal of the Elvish Linguistic Fellowship, devoted to the scholarly study of the invented languages of J.R.R. Tolkien. VT is indexed by the Modern Language Association.

Some issues of VT contain the first published editions of some primary Tolkien material (linguistic notes, letters, etc.).

Parma Eldalamberon 'The Book of Elven-tongues' is a journal of the Elvish Linguistic Fellowship, a special interest group of the Mythopoeic Society.

Many PE issues contain first publications of primary Tolkien linguistic material (notes, research, letters from J. R. R. Tolkien on his invented languages.)

Founded in 1967, The Mythopoeic Society is a non-profit international literary and educational organization for the study, discussion, and enjoyment of fantastic and mythic literature, especially the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Charles Williams. Membership in the Mythopoeic Society is open to all scholars, writers, and readers of these literatures.

The Society sponsors three periodicals. Mythprint is a monthly bulletin of book reviews, articles, events and other notices of interest to Society members. Mythlore is the Society's peer-reviewed journal that publishes scholarly articles on mythic and fantastic literature. Finally, Mythic Circle is a literary annual of original poetry and short stories.

Festival in the Shire: A celebration of all things Tolkien inspired. J.R.R. Tolkien inspired Conference, Exhibition and Festival

August 13th -15th, 2010 at Y Plas, Machynlleth, Wales, United Kingdom.


Machynlleth is to host an exciting new international festival next year. Festival in the Shire is a conference, exhibition and fair celebrating themes inspired by the author J.R.R. Tolkien which will be held in the town’s historic Y Plas house and grounds.

This three day festival caters to serious Tolkien fans as well as families and everyone else by holding three separate events for different audiences. Tolkien literature enthusiasts will have the opportunity to delve deeper into Tolkien’s work with a three day conference entitled ‘Welsh influences on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien’. This will feature internationally respected speakers such as Jane Chance, Douglas Anderson, Tom Shippey, Colin Duriez, John Garth, and Verlyn Flieger and includes experts from Welsh universities such as Dimitra Fimi from University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC), a specialist on Tolkien’s Welsh connections and his use of the Welsh language.

Keen collectors of Tolkien’s books and Tolkien inspired art will be delighted at the exhibition element of the festival. The exhibition will showcase rare first editions of Tolkien’s books, original art and other Tolkien artefacts. Many of these pieces are from private collections and unlikely to be shown again. In addition to displaying their paintings some of the famous artists who have illustrated Tolkien’s books will be present at this event and attendees will have the exciting opportunity to meet them and discuss their work. Artists attending include Roger Garland, Ted Nasmith, Jef Murray, Peter Pracownik and Ruth Lacon.
