Comment on Wow, would you look at that Mallorn cover? by Jeremy Edmonds

I think it unfortunate that they are moving away from the academic focus (especially the inclusion of fiction material.) There are so many channels for that type of material (Amon Hen to say the least) that I don't like the dilution of what has been a cornerstone of academic discourse.

It might be interesting to see illustrations of the mallorn on the cover by a variety of artists. I wonder if they will be able to pursuade any big names to contribute some artwork.

Inside the magazine is very minimal, too minimal I think. Personally I would like to see a return to the illustrated headings at the start of each article. I think Steve Lines did a lot of them.

The editorial by Tom Shippey is interesting, and they have an afterword by the author Celia Dart-Thornton. The articles are of mixed quality and generally less 'academic' I think. There is also a fairly large section of short fiction, which I haven't read - not my thing.

I hear that the editor hopes to publish various items by Tolkien, which will be interesting to see.

Oooh! A winner on the first guess. Good job!

By the way, did you have to use the reCaptcha interface when you posted this? I just added it and wasn't sure if it was up when you wrote your comment.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who didn't need a copy of LOTR on hand! I reached new heights of geekness when I bookmarked an online calendar for 1942 (showing the phases of the moon) so that I could follow the discussion of some of the "ghost moons" in the text.

At first I thought you were looking into Himling/Himring, but after some head scratching I now think you were looking into the mysterious seven streams ridden over by Boromir on his way to Rivendell. (RC p.362) Am I correct...!

A while ago, I started compiling a list of Tolkien's works in various languages (whether the books were published or not) so that it could be used by collectors to find titles in those languages and use them for search on the internet (or just to see how 'The Fellowship of the Ring', for instance, would sound in different languages). At first I started only with the Middle-Earth related books but now I decided to expand the list. It is far from complete, but I'm working on it. You can take a look at it here:

I'm also working on collecting translations of the Ring Verse and I'll soon post it.

Awesome! So inappropriate that it becomes desirable. The headlight set into the Eye is a great touch!

I agree. Narn I Hin Hurin is an excellent story. So is Beren and Luthien. Perhaps they could make a trilogy, each movie one of the main stories from the Silmarillion or Unfinished Tales.

I recommend also Ms Clarke's stories contained in "The Ladies of Grace Adieu", which are set in the same world as her first novel. On page 176 there's a footnote about the brugh (the ancestral common habitation of the fairy race):

The truth is that the brugh was a hole [...] to paraphrase a writer of fanciful stories for children, this was not a confortable hole, it was not even a dry, bare sandy hole; it was a nasty, dirty, wet hole.
