Half the book comprises notes and glossary. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a scholarly edition of the Middle English romance. SirGawain presents a late Arthurian legend which was penned in a relatively obscure West-Midlanddialect of early Middle English. The text, as translated by Tolkien, still maintains the auditoryalliteration used to drive the poem itself. This in itself is a blessed treasure to the reader, as it is ararely used method of poetry. The story is a gem in that it presents a fallible human, Gawain, whostrives by the Grace of God to fulfill his oaths made. It is an exposition of piety, casting the Arthurianknight into a wholly Christian light. Tolkien was responsible for the glossary and for the text of the poem, while Gordon produced themajority of the accompanying notes. Pages untrimmed as issued. Only 2500 copies were printed. A very presentable copy of this very rare item. Exceptionally scarce in dustjacket which is protected in removable Brodart cover. I have some other very scarce and collectible Tolkien books listed.
