1942 TOLKIEN, THE HOBBIT, RARE 3rd EDITION, DUST JACKET, NO RESERVE Click images to enlarge Description The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien 3rd impression, Allen & Unwin, 1942 Selling here is the rare 3rd edition of Tolkien's 'The Hobbit...', published in London, 1942 under the war economy standards. Apparently approx 1500 copies printed following the loss of the remaining 2nd Impression copies when the warehouse in which they were stored was destroyed by bombs. This a good complete copy with the original dust jacket approx 80-90% present (see pictures): colour frontispiece plate ('The Hill : Hobbiton-across-the-Water'), black & white line illustrations and a leaf of publisher's advertisements at rear. Examples of this early edition in jacket are uncommon. 8vo, original publishers green cloth with dust jacket, printed map endpapers. A good clean copy overal, in original state (see condition report below). The book measures 13.5cm by 18.9cm. The contents are complete in 310pp, with frontis and final ad leaf. FOR SALE WITHOUT RESERVE. Please View My Other Items For Sale Condition: Dust Jacket as seen in photo's, chipped with some loss, spine browned and some fraying along the creases. The book is firm, externally very good with some light rubbing to extremities, a few spots and smudges, slight bump to corners. Two worm holes on lower hinge behind the 'H' of Hobbit, 3cm worm track on lower endpaper down part of the lower hinge adjacent. Contents firm and oherwise in very good clean condition, some light water stains to top half of foredge through final third or so of the block, though this is fairly minor. Light crease to top outer corner of initial couple of quires, though this appears to be the offset from a paper crease/flaw on the front free endpaper-again a minor detraction. Overal a good clean copy as viewed in images, with a good unrestored jacket. FOR SALE WITHOUT RESERVE. THIS BOOK WEIGHS APPROX 1KG PACKED.
