I have checked back on my notes used to compile the Hobbit article.
The 2000 jackets mentioned were Houghton Mifflin not Allen & Unwin - I have amended the wording to clarify.
The 8th impression A&U jackets were delivered to the binder at the same time that the last 1000 copies of the 7th impression were being bound, so it would appear they were used instead of the correct 7th impression jackets. They were supposed to be price-clipped and overprinted with a new price of 12s.6d.

The original edition was in hardback. I have a copy somewhere. Published by Houghton Mifflin I think.
Personally I think KWF spoiled the book when she tried to add in material from the early volumes of HoMe.

The red numbers will be cross-references to a cash book or similar, each number being a payment to a person or company. The A&U ledgers use a similar system.

He expected the Estate to bring the original One Ring into court so it could be compared with his rings....

Truly a face-palm moment.

It is quite possible that some copies may have been re-jacketed at some stage.
The copy at tolkienlibrary is dated April 2008.
