Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth

The exhibition dates are January 25 through May 12, 2019.

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” With these words the Oxford professor J.R.R. Tolkien ignited a fervid spark in generations of readers. From the children’s classic The Hobbit to the epic The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien’s adventurous tales of hobbits and elves, dwarves and wizards have introduced millions to the rich history of Middle-earth. Going beyond literature, Tolkien’s Middle-earth is a world complete with its own languages and histories. Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth celebrates the man and his creation. The exhibition will be the most extensive public display of original Tolkien material for several generations. Drawn from the collections of the Tolkien Archive at the Bodleian Library (Oxford), Marquette University Libraries (Milwaukee), the Morgan, and private lenders, the exhibition will include family photographs and memorabilia, Tolkien’s original illustrations, maps, draft manuscripts, and designs related to The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.

Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth is organized by the Morgan Library & Museum in collaboration with the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford University and with the support of The Tolkien Estate, The Tolkien Trust and members of the Tolkien family.

The Morgan exhibition is made possible through the generosity of Fay and Geoffrey Elliott.

If you are thinking of attending this event and have the Tolkien:Maker of Middle-earth Bodleian book, then have a look at page 410, as it states which items will be on display in New York, sadly not all the items that are on display in Oxford.

I think they could use some of what we have to fill up the corners and show a bit of what Tolkien set off in people. Or perhaps be part of an ancillary or follow up exhibit. A follow up would be popular and help bring more folks back to the Morgan.

No, they have already published what is going to be on display in New York, and it is not as many items as on display at Oxford.

Well they added things to the Bodleian Exhibit after the catalog was set. We'd just be helping them out.

Not a bad idea to follow up on Arbor...

A few members contacted the Bodleian, to offer items for the exhibition, and were politely declined as the catalog had already been produced, it looks to me like this is the same for the New York exhibition, as the catalog has already been produced.

I've confirmed with the Morgan Library that additional items cannot be accommodated. Also, the catalogue listings of items traveling to the Morgan Library from the Bodleian is correct (page 410, bottom) but the start date printed in the catalogue is incorrect - the catalogue states January 21, but the announced (and correct) date is January 25.

A few additional items from the Morgan Library collection will be shown (including the Selby letter pictured in the catalogue on page 312), and other items from "a private lender".

Some merchandise (above and beyond the catalogue book) will be available, but not all that the Bodleian shop is selling due to space concerns. The items are not selected yet.

A reception will be held for the exhibition, but the Morgan combines into a single reception all of the exhibitions for the season. There are four exhibitions that will be shown starting in January - announced are this one, and "By Any Means: Modern and Contemporary Drawings from the Morgan" which runs from January 18 through May 12. The date of the reception isn't set yet. The other two exhibits are not announced.

Small update- the reception will likely be a week or more after the Tolkien exhibition opens - also, it is for Morgan fellows and major donors only (not open to the public).
